Who is The Bug Dad?
My name is Nick Heydel. I am a local dad from the Detroit area who has a big passion for bugs! I do educational, hands on bug shows for children of all ages. I keep everything from Giant Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches to Giant African Millipedes and they all can't wait to meet you! I work a regular job during the week, so I am usually only available on weekends. However, If you would like a bug show on a weekday, contact me and I will do what I can to accommodate you.
I believe that nurturing and encouraging a love for nature is one of the most important things that we can do for our children. Bugs are a great way to communicate to them that nature isn't just in some far off picturesque national park, it's right in your own backyard! Just turn over a rock and you'll find all kinds of creepy crawly wonders that only get more fascinating the more you learn about them. I bring some of the more impressive specimens that the invertebrate world has to offer in order to show just how much fun bugs can be!
What is a bug show?
I bring in pet bugs from my large personal collection to show to the audience. I talk about what makes each species and/or individual special, what role they play in their native ecosystem, what they eat, how they keep from being eaten, ect. I handle most of the animals so that everyone can get a close up view, and many of them I allow to be handled by the audience. Show length varies depending on the size and participation of the audience. An average bug show for 10-20 kids is about 30-45 minutes, but I can nerd out on my bugs for as long as anyone is interested!
